Summary
Hannah was childless; in the ancient Near East a closed womb would have brought shame upon one's household. After fervently praying at Shiloh, the Lord responds by opening Hannah's womb. She conceives and gives birth to Samuel whom she dedicates to the Lord. In response, Hannah sings a song introducing the key themes of humility and pride-themes that will reappear in the book of Samuel in connection with Israel's king. Hannah's Magnificat redefines power around humility-a quality that finds its fulfillment in the person of Jesus.
