Imago Dei

Why do we have a ministry team focused on biblical diversity and biblical justice? What does the name Imago Dei mean? What does it mean for Calvary Church? How can I be a part of this?

These are some of the questions that we hear when we interact with people about this new ministry team. These conversations are encouraging because people at Calvary Church have great hopes and godly aspirations to make a difference in our world. We believe that God cares for people, and that all people are made “Imago Dei”—in the image of God.

We called together a leadership team with people who are part of Calvary Church to think, pray, and study Scripture. We then asked them to lead us in a greater understanding of God’s heart for all people and for righteous living in our community. Below are the pathways this team has put together for Calvary Church to take next steps.

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. -

Micah 6:8

Pathway Two - Twin Cities Cultures

Foreign to Familiar

Read the book, “Foreign to Familiar: A Guide to Understanding Hot and Cold Climate Cultures” by Sarah Lanier. It is a short and easy read that will begin to help you understand the unique distinctions between the many cultures that live in our neighborhoods in the Twin Cities. Sarah’s love and sensitivity for people of all nations will touch your heart.

Pathway Three - Deeper Study

Discussion Videos by Doctor Harold Lewis

God’s people are multi-ethnic, multi-racial, and multi-cultural. To reach the entire world for Jesus, biblical diversity is required. The gospel sets the foundation for racial and cultural reconciliation. Video topics include:

The Third Option

Read “The Third Option: Hope for a Racially Divided Nation” by Miles McPherson. This book addresses racial division, a topic many have shied away from, for fear of asking the wrong question or saying the wrong thing. Instead of going along with the culture, Pastor Miles directs us to choose the Third Option: honoring the priceless value of God’s image in every person we meet. This book challenges us to fully embrace God’s creativity and beauty, as expressed in the diversity of his people.

Biblical Ways to Take Action Against Injustice and Racism

Read the Converage article by Scott Ridout entitled, “Five Biblical Ways to Take Action Against Injustice and Racism.” It is one thing to know the truth of Scripture—it is a completely different skill to know how to apply it to our present situation.

Converge’s Prayer & Fasting Experience

This prayer and fasting experience will use Converge’s Fast and Prayer Guide for those moved to pray for racial justice, equity, and harmony. Participants can pray through the guide as a group or on their own.

Prayer & Fasting Experience

The Imago Dei ministry team was formed to continue and expand Calvary Church’s movement towards being a faith community
unified in our diversity. The name comes from the passage in Genesis that says all humans are made in the image of God, by his design, for his glory. The team’s purpose is to guide Calvary Church to pursue a more intentional, tangible, and strategic expression of biblical diversity and biblical justice as informed by the Word of God and initiated by the Holy Spirit.
