Series: Fulfillment of Time
Summary
Matthew quotes from Jeremiah who references the weeping of Rachel in Ramah. The Prophet Jeremiah paints a vivid picture of the agony of exile by figuratively describing Rachel, one of the matriarchs, as weeping for her descendants on the path toward exile. Just as Babylon attempted to eliminate God’s people, so too, Herod tries to kill the Son of God. Matthew understands the events of Jesus through the lens of the Old Testament—just as God was faithful in a time of despair in Judah’s history, God would remain faithful in keeping his promises in the person of Jesus.
